I just picked this game up for the first time, and after going through the XP SP2 issues,It installed perfect, but there is a constant popping and cracking sound in the main menu, the in game menu, when I move the mouse. Normally, I wouldn't care, but the sound is constant when I'm playing the actual game. I've downloaded the patches, Tried changing the volume settings, it still occurs. I know my laptop can run this game.
Specs
Dual AMD turion 64 bit 2.6g processor
2 gigs of RAM
ATI Xpress 1150 self dedicated 128
on board sound

Any solutions?

sounds like (pun intended) it could be speakers,do you use external speakers or the ones built in,if external try swapping them or use test them with something else,if built in try external.

hope this helps :)

Well, you could try open up the command menu and enter "dxdiag".
Then go to the sound tab, and set the direct x sound acclearate shit to none.

What brings me to the question - do you use onboard sound? This is most of the time the reason for cracking and fucked up sound. I use a soundcard and this never ever happend again.

Tried external speakers, popping not as bad. Generally quits after a few minutes in the game but when you bring up the menu, starts all over again. Which does lead me to believe that it could be onboard sound, but I've never had any trouble out of any other game, including games lke fear or half life 2. So I will try to run the Direct X, ad see what happens. Thanks for the help!
